Why open-and-highlight, when you can drag-and-drop? Welcome to URLologist a 'drag-n-drop' URL/e'mail address extraction utility by DOVA-K Software. URLologist has been designed with a very small screen and memory footprint so that it can be used in conjunction with your favorite browser.
Operation:
To extract URL and e'mail addresses from most text files, simply drop the file onto the URLologist icon. Within a moment the window you see below will appear.(The very first time you use URLologist you will be asked to locate your bookmark file and file type of Address Book. See Preferences section below for details.)
In the main window will be the http, ftp and e'mail addresses that URLologist detected and extracted from your file. To visit any of the URL's listed in the window click on the address once to highlight it then click the 'Now' button which will launch your browser, if it not already running, and connect to the chosen address. Double-clicking on an address will open a dialog box with the address ready to be edited. Make changes and close dialog, main window will be updated.
When you select a file in the main window it is also automatically copied to the clipboard for easy pasting into other documents/files.
Click the small disclosure triangle to enlarge the window to view up to eight addresses at a time. Click again to shrink window.
If you need to see how an address was used in the document, select an address and click the 'Cont' button. A small window will open showing the address, highlighted like this, in context. As long as the window is open you can select other files/addresses to view in context.
Clicking the 'Later' button will add the address directly to your browser's bookmark file after prompting you for the name you would like it saved as. If you are using MSIE™ as your browser you will also be given the opportunity to enter text for balloon comments. These bookmarks will be preceded by an "*" to make it easy to tell which files URLologist added.
E'mail addresses will either be saved to your existing "AddressBook.html" file or to one of two temporary files, created by URLologist at the same level as your bookmark file. These e'mail addresses can then be imported into your permanaent address book later.
To batch process all email or URL addresses click the "Batch" button and choose either email or URL addresses and whether or not to save with or without names. If you choose to save addresses with names URLologist will prompt for a name as it saves each address. (TIP-If you open context window before you begin batch processing you will be able to see name or title associated with each address as it was used in the original document.) If you choose to save addresses without names URLologist will name each one in the following manner:
http://www.url.com will be saved as www.url.com
someone@someisp.com will be saved as someone
Clicking the 'Get F' button will open a standard Choose File dialog box that that will allow you to extract addresses from files anywhere on your disk.
Clicking the 'Get C' will extract addresses from the contents of the clipboard. This feature is especially handy when used in conjunction with the View Page Source function. After loading a page with lots of links choose View Page Source from the options. After the source page has loaded, select all, copy, and then have URLologist extract all the addresses by clicking 'GET CLIP'. Now you can go to each linked page at your leisure without constantly having to go "back" to the original page.
If you have AppleScript™ installed and are using Netscape Communicator™, clicking on the small 'P' button while holding down the Option Key will hide Netscape™. Repeating will show Netscape™ and maximize the browser window on the screen.
Preferences:
The very first time you launch URLologist a small dialog box will automatically open up at the preferences folder level of your drive asking you to locate your bookmark file and indicate the file type of your Address Book.
Locate your browser's preferences folder and double-click to open it. Once open, highlight your bookmark file.
Also choose an Address Book file type. If you are using Netscape Communicator™ 4.5 or higher choose .ldif otherwise for earlier versions of Navigator™, Communicator™ and Outlook Express™, choose HTML. Click 'DONE'.
If you chose .ldif URLologist will create a file called "TempAddBook.ldif" in your Netscape Communicator™ preferences folder. If you chose HTML URLologist will either use your existing "AddressBook.html" file or create one. These files are where e'mail addresses will be written by URLologist. These addresses can be seamlessly imported into your permanent address book later. For instuctions on how to import addresses consult your e'mail programs operating instructions. • Special note for Outlook Express™ users. If URLologist does not find a 'Netscape ƒ' folder it will create one at the preferences folder level of your hard drive and place the "AddressBook.html" file in it. To import addresses chose 'Import Contacts' and in the dialog box that opens place a check beside Navigator™. Outlook Express™ will locate the 'Netscape ƒ' folder and import the addresses in the "AddressBook.html" file into the "contacts" address book. •
Known Bugs:
